The past few years have seen significant growth in visibility and strengthening of rights for people whose sex or gender is outside of the binary male and female system, with over a dozen jurisdictions having addressed the issue in some way, including the passage of multiple new laws in California. The legal landscape of intersex and nonbinary rights is quickly shifting, with legislation regarding the rights of people who are intersex to bodily autonomy and of people who are nonbinary to accurate gender markers. In addition, improving inclusion around gender in the legal system means knowing best practices for supporting people who are gender non-conforming, or identify as a gender other than female or male.
Participants in this interactive workshop will develop and refresh their knowledge of intersex and nonbinary rights and gender inclusion issues. They will leave with a toolbox of concrete ideas and resources to help make their law practice, courtroom, or other setting safer and more welcoming, and an ability to identify and issue spot legal issues for clients who are nonbinary or intersex.
