Legal Ethics : Alison Buchanan will present significant legal ethics and professional responsibility developments over the past eighteen months. Ms. Buchanan is chair and the immediate past chair of the California Lawyer’s Association Ethics Committee and will discuss recent case law, rule changes, and advisory opinions that may impact lawyers' practice and risk management procedures. Elimination of Bias : Laura Norris, a Professor at Santa Clara University School of Law and co-author of the 2021 Diversity in Innovation Best Practices guide, will cover both the reasons for the lack of racial, ethnic, and gender diversity in innovative workplaces, explicitly addressing the research uncovering the imbalance of participation by diverse individuals, examine the real and perceived barriers to improvement, and discuss best practices to lower these barriers. Competence : Kathryn Diemer, Managing Partner of Diemer & Wei, will discuss the issues of how health-related concerns affect competency, including specifically, strategies for attorneys to use to assist themselves in determining whether an event or health crisis has either temporarily or permanently put their ability to practice at risk, including strategies for limitation of risk and assessment for each attorney and firm to self-regulate and manage risk related to competency.
